South of Laoag and close to Paoay, it offers visitors an opportunity to explore a different part of the province, with a coastline shaped by fishing, trade and the sea.

One of the town’s most distinctive places is Sitio Remedios Heritage Village, a seaside property created to preserve the character of an Ilocano village. Together with the Pangil rock formations, Currimao’s waterfront and its historic port area, it makes the town an interesting addition to an Ilocos Norte itinerary.

Things to Do in Currimao - Where Is Currimao?

Currimao lies on the western coast of Ilocos Norte, south of Laoag and near the neighbouring towns of Paoay and Batac. Its position makes it a possible stop when travelling between the northern towns of Ilocos Norte and destinations farther south. The town faces the West Philippine Sea and includes coastal communities where fishing and other activities connected with the sea remain part of local life. Visitors can combine a trip to Currimao with Paoay Church, Paoay Lake or Batac, depending on the time available.

Things to Do in Currimao - The History

Currimao’s development has long been connected with its position on the coast. The town became an intermediate port on a shipping route operated by the Compañía General de Tabacos de Filipinas, linking it with trade between Manila and Aparri. According to the municipality’s history, permanent settlement grew after the shipping line began operating through Currimao in 1895. The port helped connect the area with other parts of the country and contributed to the development of the surrounding communities. Currimao was inaugurated as a separate municipality on 21 January 1921, with territory taken from Paoay and Batac. Its history as a coastal settlement and trading port remains visible around the town today.

Things to Do in Currimao - The Historic Port

The port is an important part of Currimao’s identity. For many years, coastal shipping provided a connection between Ilocos Norte and other parts of the Philippines, carrying goods and supporting trade in the province. Near the waterfront are remains associated with the town’s trading history, including the Tabacalera and Spanish-era lighthouse ruins. These places reflect Currimao’s connection with the tobacco trade and coastal navigation. The port remains a working area, so visitors should observe any local restrictions and avoid entering operational facilities without permission. The surrounding waterfront provides a setting from which to appreciate the town’s relationship with the sea.

Currimao Coastal Road and Currilights

The Currimao coastal road and waterfront are places to see the town’s coastline and enjoy views across the sea. The area has also become known for Currilights, a series of miniature lighthouse-shaped lamps along the seawall boulevard and fisherman’s wharf.

The lights add another attraction to the waterfront, particularly in the evening. The coastal road has been promoted as one of Ilocos Norte’s road-trip destinations and can be included in a visit to the town’s historic port and beaches.

Things to Do in Currimao - Pangil Coral Rock Formations

The Pangil Coral Rock Formations are among Currimao’s best-known natural attractions. The formations extend along the coast and create an unusual shoreline of weathered rock, shallow pools and inlets. Walking along the shore gives visitors an opportunity to see how the rocky coastline changes with the tide. The formations are also popular for photography, especially when the lower light of the morning or afternoon brings out their shape and texture.

The area has been identified as a conservation site, with coral gardens and a marine fish sanctuary. Currimao has also undertaken work to support seagrass and seaweed conservation around the formations. The rocks can be sharp and slippery, particularly when wet. Wear suitable footwear, watch the waves and avoid standing on living coral or disturbing marine life in the pools.

Sitio Remedios Heritage Village

Sitio Remedios Heritage Village, in Barangay Victoria, Currimao, is a seaside heritage property created to evoke an Ilocano village. It combines accommodation with buildings and spaces intended to preserve the appearance and character of an earlier period in Ilocos Norte. The village was developed by Dr Jovencio “Joven” Cuanang, whose interest in Filipino art and cultural heritage led him to establish the property in his home province. Historic houses and materials were acquired and reconstructed within the village, creating a setting where visitors can see elements of traditional Ilocano architecture. Sitio Remedios is a created heritage village rather than an original town preserved in its existing location. Its interest lies in the way buildings and architectural materials were brought together to recreate an Ilocano community setting beside the sea.

Architecture and Village Setting

The buildings at Sitio Remedios reflect the materials and architectural details associated with older Ilocano houses. Timber, brickwork, traditional windows and household furnishings contribute to the character of the village.

The property is arranged around shared spaces, with paths connecting the houses and other buildings. It was designed to evoke a community rather than a conventional collection of hotel rooms. Walking through the village provides an opportunity to look at the different buildings and the craftsmanship incorporated into them.

The village also includes Capilla de San Miguel, a chapel named in honour of Currimao’s patron saint. Its setting within the property reflects the importance of the church and public gathering places in traditional town life.
